The First Visitors for 2009
We are pleased to introduce to you.....

.....Some VERY special visitors, Bethany Limpach and her mother, Cher Limpach, of High Point, NC.  They are direct descedants of the Bergt family who immigrated to Frohna with the Saxons in 1839  from Germany. Their family's homestead is the site of the Saxon Memorial.  Bethany and Cher are standing in front of the log cabin home built by Christian & Wilhelm Bergt.  What a terrific way to start the 170th anniversary of the immigration with members of the Bergt family coming home.

Having Fun with Walther
That's exactly what 50 music students from Walther Lutheran High School of Melrose Park, IL did when they stopped at the SLM on Saturday, March 7th.  They were excited to get their picture taken with their school's namesake.
Another first for 2009: This group is the first bus tour to visit SLM.

Boy Scout Troop 246 February Campout

Boy Scout Troop #246 came to try out the campground facilities in February of 2009.  They braved the cold, the rain and the snow in order to earn their outdoor cooking merit badge.  The members who participated are led by Scout Master Tom Brewer and Darryl Peetz.
The scouts who attended the weekend camp out are:
Jim & Joe Pieper, Jacob Hengl and Vernon Norfolk.

They baked blueberry muffins in a metal oven over the campfire and they also learned about proper food handling and safety in the Visitor's Center.

An extra project they did in addition to clearing brush to clean up the camping area

was to make this nice sturdy log bench.  It works great!  Thanks guys!

A generous heart & donation

Marvin Popp of Cape Girardeau, MO; a former resident of Frohna and neighbor to the Bergt family made a very nice donation to the collection of artifacts cared for at the Saxon Lutheran Memorial.  He is standing by a late 1800 baby buggy that was used by his grandmother and mother.  It is made of wicker and has an upholstered interior and is supported by steel wheels.  He also donated some other wooden furniture; 2 dressers, a small table and 2 cane-bottom chairs to match.

Here's Something New To Do

Have you ever quilted before?     Would you like to learn how to quilt?

Do you get bored throughout the summer?     Like to stay inside while it's hot outside?

Is quilting your favorite hobby?    Want a fun project to do with your friends?

You are invited to make a short trip to the Visitor's Center and see the quilt that is on display and ready to be quilted.  We have it set up to offer the opportunity to fill a niche or learn a new skill.  This is great for beginners and seasoned quilters alike.  It's a simple patchwork quilt with a wavy quilt pattern.

The quilt top was pieced by Dorene Grebing of Frohna, MO.  She is also a very active and dedicated council member of the Saxon Lutheran Memorial.  She made this quilt as a fund-raiser project for Concordia Lutheran School's Efficiency Fund.

It is made with over 200 different 4"squares.  The variety of squares represents all the different people who have come through Concordia Lutheran School.  And likewise with the quilting, it will be done by many hands which adds to the uniquenss and history of the quilt.  The person who buys this quilt will certainly be surrounded by many stories that are sewen in with each fabric square and told with each stitch quilted.

The quilt is on display and ready for quilting.  Why don't you be a part of this quilt's story?

The steady hands of  a quilter.                                          Dorene concentrates on each of her stitches.
